Learning goals

Students learn to assess the quality and structure of data from sport and training, turn informal requirements into conceptual data models, translate them into relational schemas, explain normalization up to third normal form, and create and query databases with SQLite, DBeaver and SQL.

Programme

1. Data foundations: data, information, variables and measurement scales; missing values, units, identifiers, traceability and reproducibility.
2. Database design: DBMS concepts, requirements, Entity–Relationship models, relationships, cardinalities and constraints; relational schemas, keys, integrity and normalization to 3NF.
3. Practical work: creating and exploring SQLite databases with DBeaver; SQL for data definition, manipulation and retrieval, including filtering, aggregation and joins. Exercises include a database of cycling races.

Materials

Slides, exercises, SQL scripts and sample databases provided by the instructor are the primary study materials. The official SQLite and DBeaver documentation and other resources indicated during lectures are optional further reading.
